Sinterklaas
St. Nicolaas, born to a poor family, was
the head of the church Myra, Turkey.
He decided that once a year the poor children
could come to the church to place there shoes outside the door. They returned
the next morning to find their shoes filled with manderins and oranges. This
tradition continued for many years. Later on he was able to place money in
their shoes.
The people loved him so much that when he
died, the 6th of December, they announced the day as St. Nicolaas
day to always remember his legacy.
This is the true story.
A little later, some parents changed the
story saying that December 6th was St. Nicolaas' birthday and that every
year he returned to give presents to the children. He now lives in Spain and visits Holland three weeks before the 6th of December
to prepare all the presents. Because
there are many children he needs some help. He has lots of Zwarte Pieten with black faces from coming down the chimneys. The
children continue to put there shoes in front of the chimney and always find
small presents inside.
The big evening is on the 5 th of december
when St Nicolaas and the Zwarte Piet
come by to give the presents to the nice children. In olden day's St Nicolaas
took the children who where not nice to others back to Spain in a sac.
Next Monday the Dutch children are going to
tell the school about this story. They will be dressed up as Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet and will prepare some pepernoten or small cookies the Pieten always give to the children.
During the assembly we will also sing songs and hope to find our shoes filled
with mandarins and chocolates.
