As a festival of light Diwali shares some similarities
with other festivals such as Hannukah and Bonfire Night, with light as a symbol
of hope and of good. A wonderful story of Rama and Sita is told at Diwali with
an evil demon to be defeated. This offers many exciting drama and literacy
opportunities. Decorations such as the colourful symmetrical Rangoli patterns
are great for applying shape and symmetry skills learnt in Maths. There are
also opportunities for art and craft with clay lights called diwas and lanterns
to guide and welcome Rama and Sita home. Diwali opens up a new culture to
children with it's dance and music and traditions, whilst demonstrating
important similarities between culture too, notably in the ways that we celebrate and
the reasons for celebrations.
